Help someone with a broken device figure out what's wrong — and whether it's worth fixing.
Tech partner

Most devices are thrown away undiagnosed — nobody knew what was broken, so nobody knew it was fixable.
A washing machine that won't spin could need a $12 belt or a $200 control board — and which one it is decides everything: whether to repair, what to buy, whether the machine is landfill. The lookup step is already solved: iFixit has the guides, PartSelect finds the part once you know which component failed. The step nobody solves is before that — diagnosis, and the repair-or-replace judgment that depends on it. That is not a search problem. It's reasoning under uncertainty, and today it lives only in the heads of experienced technicians.

What to build
Your Mission
Build an AI-powered solution that guides a person from symptom to diagnosis to a confident repair-or-replace decision.
Think interactive diagnosis: asking the question that discriminates between failure modes, or proposing the cheapest next test ("unplug it — does the drum turn freely by hand?"), weighing which failures are likely for that model and age, and turning the diagnosis into an honest verdict — this fix costs X, the machine has Y years left, here is when replacement genuinely wins. How you solve it is up to you. Web retrieval — service manuals, error-code tables, failure patterns in owner forums, part prices — is a supporting ingredient here, not the solution.

Master the Challenge.

Scope
What Success Looks Like
There is no single right solution. You could take the problem in many directions — pick a specific user, a clear decision, and make that experience work well.
Tip:
Don't try to solve the whole problem at once. Pick one device category — washing machines, laptops, e-bikes — and make the diagnostic conversation genuinely good for it.

Requirements
Technical Challenge
Think about how your solution will conduct an interactive diagnosis that narrows failure modes with each answer or test, choose the cheapest and most informative check to propose next, estimate repair cost and remaining lifespan honestly enough to support a repair-or-replace verdict, and know when to stop and say "this one needs a technician." These are opportunities to explore, not requirements you need to satisfy all at once.
Tip:
Your solution doesn’t need to be production-ready. We welcome everything from early prototypes to fully working implementations and ambitious technical explorations.

Use of tech
Recommended Tools
Exa provides a web retrieval layer that might be useful here. It can supply the supporting evidence — service manuals and error-code tables for the exact model, failure patterns reported in owner forums, and current part prices to ground the repair-or-replace math. The diagnostic reasoning is yours to build. Whether Exa fits your solution is up to you.
Tip:
Whether or not you use Exa in your solution is entirely up to you.
