Visual Communication Designer
The Challenge
People are unhappy with government. But they don’t know where to productively channel their frustration. That’s because government is complex, authority is fragmented, and power is sneaky!
So we’re hiring a visual communication designer to help us diagram & visualize the flows of power and authority in the system. Then when citizens are frustrated about something in society, they can understand what to do about it.
The Role
We’re going to interview experts in California politics & policy to understand how the system works and then visualize it in diagrams / flow charts / infographics.
While we will eventually want these diagrams to have a strong visual aesthetic, the core part of the job is succinctly and clearly distilling how the system really works in understandable graphics — this work is more UX than UI.
We expect this to be a ~10-15 hour per week commitment at the outset with a chance to expand over time. We have a strong preference for this person to be Northern California-based so we can do in-person sessions with political experts in Sacramento & the Bay Area.
We’ll pay hourly at the market rate, though the project itself is a nonprofit civic endeavor, so if you are open to “discounting for democracy,” that’d be great too. :)

Effective Government California
Effective Government California is a network of individuals — largely from the technology industry — who want to help close the gap between California's values & our outcomes. We're doing this by supporting lawmakers & advocates who push policies to create more housing & transit, less carbon, fewer inmates, fewer wildfires, higher test scores, and more good jobs.
