Content Designer

Airtable

Remote

As a company, usability and comprehension is at the heart of our challenge. We already know that building software is valuable, now we need to make it easy and accessible enough for everyone to understand. As our product design team crafts the right metaphors and interfaces for making software, we’re looking for an equal partner to bring language to bear on this challenge.

We are hiring our first Content Designer at Airtable. You’ll report into our Head of Design, and set the direction for both the content in the product, and the content team itself. You’ll help choose the words at every level of the product, from naming and framing new features, to user flows and interactions, down to microinteractions, instructions and error messages. You’ll shape the tone, principles and frameworks of our product’s voice, building artifacts and processes that scale your ideas and elevate the work of everyone around you.

What you'll do
Use language to help our users achieve their goals.Deeply understand our users, who range across industries, job descriptions, and technical abilities. Work closely with our user research team to generate and circulate these insights. Find the right tone and specific words to help these users understand the basics of Airtable, and grow their abilities as they learn the deeper and more powerful parts of our platform.
Scale yourself. As the first hire on a team, you’ll immediately be overwhelmed with how much there is to do. You’ll find ways of scaling your skills and expertise — writing style guides, articulating principles, leading workshops, or however else you like to work. (We expect this role to be an IC role to start, perhaps growing into a manager role in the future depending on interest)
Help define the writing practice at Airtable. We’re eager to learn from you about what makes an impactful group of writers at a company like ours. While you’ll be the first Content Designer within the Design team, we have other writing disciplines in the brand and marketing team. You’ll work closely with them and together define what you each contribute individually, and collectively.
Who you are
You’re an experienced writer, and have a collection of writing samples showing your approach and style. (These don’t have to be from software, but a bonus if they are. You’re a lifelong learner.Your work’s details and nuances are important to you, and you never feel “done” learning the craft. You’re comfortable with Figma / Sketch / similar tools. Our product designers work in Figma, and we hope to have our content live there as well. You should either know these tools already, or be eager to learn them. You gravitate towards complex and technical spaces. You are someone who likes understanding technical concepts, then using that deep understanding to craft elegant and simple language. You like saying “we” more than “I”.Your team will be a collaborative bunch, and you’ll be working closely with other designers, engineers, PMs, marketers, researchers, and more. We are greater than the sum of our parts. You just go for it.As the first in this role, we’ll look to you to take the initiative and have an opinion on what we need to succeed. If you think something is a good idea, it probably is, and we want you to go for it. You’re not afraid to ask a “spicy” question.Growing our product, team, and culture means reflecting and sometimes challenging our practice and approach. We are open to adapting and growing. You can weather a growth spurt.Airtable has more than doubled in size since early 2020, and we’re not slowing down soon.Things change a lot around here– just when you have your head around a process, we outgrow it. We're looking for people who are patient with uncertainty and can help us rise to the occasion of each new moment in our company's rapid growth.
