CASTING DESIGN ENGINEER

We are seeking an individual who is motivated, adaptable, quick learning, and has a high level of attention to detail to fulfill a design role for investment casting in the SpaceX Foundry. You will be responsible for initial gating and process design on multiple components for our next generation rocket engines, and structural components in a variety of vacuum cast alloys. After initial product introduction, you will maintain a portfolio of castings during full production to improve yield and reduce manufacturing cost.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design and optimize gating schemes for equiaxed investment casting
Work closely with responsible engineering group to incorporate changes into the part design that increase manufacturability
Develop and document part specific processing designed to produce the highest reliability and quality possible for investment casting products
Produce accurate and complete CAD models of casting designs and auxiliary tooling
Evaluate solidification FEA to improve casting robustness
Ensure gating designs are optimized for processing through all phases of the production process
Develop manufacturing planning and special processing technique documentation for entire foundry lifecycle
Evaluate casting defect root cause and determine and drive implementation of appropriate corrective action(s)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
2+ years of professional experience using CAD

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Advanced degree in an engineering or technical discipline
Experience with new product design and processing for investment casting and manufacturing
Software skills related to process simulation or production modeling
Demonstrated track record of success in a rapidly growing, fast-paced, and highly competitive environment
Personality and drive to execute in a scrappy entrepreneurial environment that operates under tight timelines and aggressive schedules
Effective written and interpersonal communication skills
Capable of interacting with and conveying concepts within all levels of our organization
Strong academic foundation coupled with hands on experience

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed
